Most residential stumps are ground below the surrounding grade so the area can be covered with chips, topsoil, seed, mulch, or basic landscape material. The exact depth depends on the stump, root flare, soil, rocks, slope, utilities, and what you want to do with the space next. If you plan to replant in the exact same spot or need a deeper finish, tell us before the quote so the technician can price it correctly.

Not always. If the price and scope are approved, the gate is unlocked, pets are secured, and we have clear access to the stump, many jobs can be completed while you are away. If access is tight, the stump is near utilities or hardscape, or you want to make decisions about cleanup on site, it is better for someone to be available by phone or in person.

Basic stump grinding leaves the chips on site, usually raked back into or around the grind area. Chips settle over time and can be useful as mulch, but they are not the same as finished soil. If you want a cleaner finish, we can quote chip haul-away, rough raking, topsoil, seeding, or grading prep before the technician starts.

No. Standard stump grinding removes the visible stump and selected root flare below grade. Many underground roots remain and naturally decay over time. If surface roots are creating a mowing, walking, fence-line, or yard-prep problem, ask about raised root grinding or surface root removal as a separate add-on.

Yes, when the roots are visible, accessible, and safe to reduce. Raised root grinding is useful for mower bumps, trip points, old root flare, fence-line prep, and rough yard cleanup. Roots near foundations, retaining walls, pavement, irrigation, utilities, or structural tree roots may need extra review and may be excluded from the approved scope.

Public utility marking may be required before certain work, but private lines are the property owner’s responsibility. Please tell us about irrigation, sprinkler lines, landscape lighting, drains, invisible dog fences, private electrical, gas, propane, or anything else hidden near the stump. We take reasonable care, but Clear Grade cannot be responsible for private lines or objects that were not marked or disclosed before work begins.

Scheduling depends on your location, route, weather, access, and job size. Photo estimates are usually the fastest way to get started because we can review stump size, access, and cleanup needs before booking. Availability is confirmed after the address, access, scope, and estimate are reviewed.

Yes. Pricing starts at $200 for a simple local stump or visit. That minimum helps cover travel, equipment setup, fuel, machine time, and the technician’s time. Multiple stumps, cleanup, root grinding, difficult access, or longer travel can change the final price, but we confirm the price before work begins.

Work time depends on stump size, wood density, rocks, slope, access, visible roots, stump count, and cleanup. We give a project-specific time expectation after reviewing the photos and site conditions.

Yes, but the finish matters. If chips are left in the hole, they will settle and break down over time, but too many chips mixed into the top layer can make grass slower to establish. For a cleaner lawn repair, ask about chip removal, topsoil, rough grading, and seeding. Watering and normal lawn care still matter after the job.

Send one wide photo of the stump and yard, one close photo showing the full ground-line diameter and root flare, one photo of the access path from the street or driveway, and one photo of any gate, slope, steps, rocks, hardscape, fence, or obstacle. If you want cleanup, also send a photo of where chips or soil would need to go.

We need a safe path for the stump grinder and room to work around the stump. Gates, stairs, steep slopes, soft ground, narrow side yards, tight corners, raised beds, fences, and parked vehicles can all affect the quote. If your gate is close to 36 inches wide or less, send a tape-measure photo before scheduling.

Often, yes. Multiple stumps can be more efficient because travel and setup are already covered in the same visit. The best approach is to send photos of every stump, label where they are located, and tell us which ones need cleanup. We can then quote the whole group instead of treating each stump as a separate trip.

Yes. If you need proof for an HOA, property manager, landlord, or contractor, let us know before the job. We can provide before-and-after photos, an invoice, and basic completion documentation showing the approved stump grinding work was completed.
